Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in St. Paul is seeking a half-time assistant director of music to assist the current full-time director of music to nurture and organize congregational and outside resources, and help broaden our strong music program to include diverse styles. The job description will be flexible depending on the qualifications of the candidate. While not all of the following skills will be found in one person, some of those sought for this job are as follows: keyboard skills, piano especially, with the ability to accompany and lead a congregation and perhaps abilities in jazz or gospel genres; ability to effectively lead rehearsals for both children and adult choirs; percussion experience with an emphasis on global sources; guitar or other instrumental skills; experience with directing a handbell choir; sensitivity to liturgical worship and social justice issues; strong organizational skills and abilities in music notation software. Job Description / Part Time
Lead congregational song
· Accompany hymns/songs, primarily on keyboard, or other instrument
· Accompany choirs, ensembles, etc. at the direction of the Director of Music
· Play at special services, such as December Lessons and Carols, midweek Advent and Lent services, Holy Week services, and special events; funerals and weddings as needed in coordination with the Director of Music.
· Attend worship committee and planning meetings, as needed.
Assist with children’s music program
· Assist with Schola, an elementary school-age choir, rehearsals weekly on Wednesday evening
· Work with Faith Formation team to provide occasional music for Sunday School, VBS, Christmas program, and other programs.
· Assist in recruitment with other children’s choirs or ensembles
Manage the music schedule to increase participation and diversity
· Manages and helps plan in advance a music schedule that includes multiple musicians, ensembles, and choirs.
· Recruit, coordinate and lead small ensembles of musicians for Sunday worship.
· Support and help plan a schedule of congregational musicians as part of Sunday morning worship
· Scheduling guest musicians to create a great a more diverse repertoire for the congregation’s worship
Competencies
· Degree in music, music education, or performance
· Expertise with gospel, jazz, global genres preferred
· Improvisational ability
· Sensitivity to liturgical worship and social justice issues
· Percussion experience with an emphasis on global sources
· Guitar, or other instrumental skills, a bonus
· Experience with handbells
· Ability to use music software
