How You Can Be a LGBTQ+ Ally

Pride Month is a time for LGBTQ+ folks to gather and celebrate their freedom to live authentically Those we care about in the LGBTQI+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersexed) community — friends, family members, colleagues, and neighbors — must confront stigma and prejudice based on their sexual orientation or gender identity while also dealing with the societal bias against mental health conditions.  During the month of June,  Gloria Dei’s Mental Health and Recovery Ministry will provide information on how you can be an ally and friend to LGBTQ+ individuals, so they feel supported in being their most authentic selves that result in better mental health.

Ways you can be an ally and friend.
Be a listener.
Be open-minded.
Be willing to talk.
Be inclusive and invite LGBT friends to hang out with your friends and family
Don’t assume that all your friends and co-workers are straight. Someone close to you could be looking for support in their coming-out process. Not making assumptions will give them the space they need.
Anti-LGBT comments and jokes are harmful. Let your friends, family and co-workers know that you find them offensive.
Confront your own prejudices and bias, even if it is uncomfortable to do so.
Defend your LGBT friends against discrimination.
Believe that all people, regardless of gender identity and sexual orientation, should be treated with dignity and respect.
The LGBTQ+ community deserves affirmed, safe, supported, joyful, and mentally healthy lives.
